This study analyzes the $3.4 billion US composite and plastic lumber industry. It presents historical demand data for the years 1996, 2001 and 2006 and forecasts for 2011 and 2016. US composite and plastic lumber demand will grow 10 percent annually through 2011, based on performance advantages over wood. Wood-plastic composites will fare better than plastic lumber. Molding and trim will remain a key market while windows and doors, decking and other applications will lead gains.
The study segregates the market into three distinct segments - residential, nonresidential, and nonbuilding. Furthermore, the market is examined for two types of materials that serve as alternatives to wood in construction applications: composites of cellulose fiber and plastic (referred to in the study as “wood-plastic composite lumber” or “composites”) and plastic resins (referred to as “plastic lumber”). In general, both types of materials are manufactured using techniques common to the plastics industry, such as extrusion and injection molding. Applications that are covered include:
molding and trim, decking, fencing, windows and doors, and other products such as playground equipment, nondecking marine structures, hot tub and spa cladding, site and leisure furniture, porch planks and railroad ties.
The entire report is framed within the composite and plastic lumber industry’s economic, technological and market environments. It analyzes products and identifies growth markets. Throughout the study, demand is related to various indicators (e.g., gross domestic product and construction expenditures). The study also places the industry into its international context.
The study also details the industry structure. Thirty-five (35) of the major manufacturers of decking are profiled, including Trex, Tapco Group, Royal Group, CertainTeed and Frypon,.discussing market shares and other key industry competitive variables.
Methodology
Statistical data is provided for demand in dollar value for the primary applications and markets. Demand for decking products is also given in lineal feet. Estimates of material usage are provided by weight for cellulosics and plastic resins.
Information and data on composite and plastic lumber were obtained from a variety of primary and secondary sources, including government publications, trade associations, industry participants, online databases and other Freedonia studies. Secondary data and background information were obtained from various trade publications, Corporate annual reports, SEC Form 10-K filings, product catalogs and other company-provided information were used extensively in framing the industry environment and as input for market size assessment.
The totals for plastic lumber in this study do not include applications in which plastics (primarily vinyl) have already attained substantial market share as of 2006 or compete more with metal than wood. For instance, excluded from the scope of this report are plastic siding, plastic windows and doors, plastic playground equipment, vinyl patio furniture and vinyl flooring. Cellulose-resin board products, such as oriented strand board, plywood and strawboard, are also excluded in the scope of the wood-plastic composite lumber segment.
