Methodology

This project involves a short survey of domestic suppliers of engineered wood products to determine for each type of product (LVL, I-beams, etc) in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 9 months to March 2004:

• production capacity,
• sales volume (in either/both cubic meters and lineal meters) and
• gross value of sales.

This involved a short electronic survey (of 3 pages) that was emailed to major Australian producers and distributors. The data was collected and compiled, and the information presented, so as not to disclose individual company information.

The report includes a set of tables identifying:

• Current production capacity in Australia and New Zealand by producer by product type (LVL, I-beam etc).
• Actual volume of production (in either/both cubic meters and lineal meters) of engineered wood products by product type from 2000 to 2004.
• Gross sales value of engineered wood products by product type from 2000 to 2004.
• An estimate of the volume of imports of engineered wood products by product type from 2000 to 2004.
• An estimate of the proportion of domestic production used in each end use segment (floor bearers and joists, wall frames, roof frames, other applications) by building sector (detached dwellings, multiunit dwellings, alterations and additions, non-residential buildings).

The report also provides an assessment of the potential market for engineered wood products in Australia in terms of the current usage of solid wood in engineered wood products key end use applications, and the potential market share that engineered wood products can gain in these end use applications.
